Shawn Shafner is an artist, educator, activist and graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Some of Shawn’s favorite experience includes a Spielberg Fellowship, the Guggenheim’s Learning Through Art department, and many working in NYC schools with Arts for All, Periwinkle Theater for Youth, among others.
Shawn toured the country as Pablo in Nickelodeon’s The Backyardigans Live! for 9 months. While this experience was finally “living the dream” for many of his castmates, Shawn realized that his dreams had drifted, and that a greater purpose was felt working closely with communities on projects he was passionate about. In 2010, Shawn founded The People’s Own Organic Power Project (or The POOP Project), creating educational and theatrical experiences that reconnect audiences to their bodies, environment, and global communities. As a community-based artist, he has enjoyed a 2015 iLAB residency (iLAND and LMCC), a 2014-15 LABA Fellowship, and work with The World Policy Institute, Fourth Arts Block, Elastic City, and Cooper Union.
Why I am excited about Move This World: I am excited about Move This World because I have felt the life-changing effects of mindfulness and embodied practice firsthand. And, having worked in NYC schools for ten years, I know how desperately these school communities (along with our greater NYC communities, and our world at large) need these practices. I am thrilled to work with MTW and be part of the solution.
